Hitachi Chemical’s *NEW* 2.0mm UHF on-metal Ultra Small Package Tag (USPT, UC7-PK2020B) sample in various sizes.

The Hitachi PK2020B tag (at 2.0mm sq) has similar read range as the Hitachi PK2525 tag (at 2.5mm sq) while being 20% smaller in size, is completely encapsulated (no exposed components) and can be used on metal. Also, the new PK2020B tag is serialized (unlike the PK2525) so additional encoding is not required to make each tag EPC unique.

EPC Gen 2 passive ultrahigh-frequency (UHF) RFID tag that is likely the smallest tags on the market, measuring just 2.0 millimeters square and 1 millimeter thick. Consisting of an Ucode7 self-serialized chip and an antenna embedded in epoxy resin, the Ultra-Small Package tag is designed to be durable enough that it could be applied via injection molding or incorporated into printed circuit boards. This means the tag could be built into a circuit board or a semiconductor’s packaging, and sustain the temperatures typically used during the manufacturing processes—as high as 260 degrees Celsius (500 degrees Fahrenheit). What especially differentiates the tag, however, is its ability to extend its read range. Due to the antenna’s small size, the tag can be interrogated only in the near field—approximately 10-20 millimeters. However, the read range can be extended up to 10 meters (30 feet) via a booster antenna designed specifically for the tag. Alternatively, the range could be extended simply by mounting the tag adjacent to a metallic component of the object on which the tag was mounted.
